Ponds and Lakes
Lakes and ponds are bodies of water surrounded by land. Lakes however, are larger, and can last for hundreds of years or more. Ponds are smaller bodies of water, and they are seasonal. They may only last for a few months. Ponds and lakes contain diverse plant and animal life. The temperatures between the two are similar. In the Summer, the bottom temperatures are around four degrees Celsius, and around 22 degrees at the top. In the Winter, the temperatures at the bottom are around four degrees Celsius as well, and the top reaches around zero degrees Celsius (the top becomes ice). Ponds and lakes have three layers. The top layer stays warm at around 18.8-24.5 degrees Celsius (65-75 degrees Fahrenheit). The middle drops to around 7.4-18.8 degrees Celsius (45-65 degrees Fahrenheit). The bottom is the coldest layer and the temperatures reach around 4-7.4 degrees Celsius (39-45 degrees Fahrenheit).
